Four students from Boyne City Middle School's Innovations class had the opportunity to showcase their technological prowess at the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) Student Technology Showcase (STS) held at the Capitol in Lansing on December 6th. The students, selected for their outstanding work in the Innovations class, impressed both visitors and legislators with their innovative projects.
Innovations, taught by Ms. Molly Hamilla, is an elective class tailored for 7th and 8th graders, emphasizing hands-on experience and creativity. The course covers a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) topics through interactive stations designed to foster problem-solving skills and encourage creative thinking. One of these stations includes the use of a 3D printer.
An inspiring aspect of the Innovations class is its partnership with the organization "Makers Making Change." This collaboration connects students equipped with 3D printers with individuals worldwide who have disabilities and require assistive devices. The students in the Innovations class play a vital role in manufacturing these devices, which are then shipped to those in need.
During the MACUL STS event, the students' displays attracted the attention of several state senators and representatives. State Representative Timmy Beson from Bay County, impressed by the students' achievements, generously took them on an exclusive tour of the Capitol. The highlight of the tour was the opportunity to step onto the House Floor, providing the students with valuable insights into the workings of Michigan's state government.
The students did a fabulous job of representing Boyne City Public Schools (BCPS) at the event. They not only showcased their technical skills but also demonstrated the school's commitment to fostering innovation and community engagement. The experience was not only educational but also fun for the students, who returned with a deeper understanding of technology and the legislative process.
Boyne City Public Schools expresses gratitude to State Representative Tim Beson for his generosity in providing the students with an insightful tour of the Capitol. The school administration commends the Innovations class for its dedication to making a positive impact through technology and congratulates the students and Ms. Hamilla on a job well done. The success of BCPS students at events like MACUL STS reflects the district's commitment to preparing students for a future where technology and innovation play a crucial role.
